I’ve been drinking post-workout shakes since college. Back then I was an idiot and dumped (almost) whatever someone told me would make me stronger in my body. I never crossed over into steroids, but was definitely drinking creatine before people even knew what was going into those supplements. Over the years I found myself trying different brands from GNC to Optimum Nutrition to whatever else I had heard was worthwhile. However, in recently I’ve tried to “de-toxify” (is that even a word) my life. Wet shaving plays a big role in this. By switching from gels and aerosol cans to soaps and creams, I’ve eliminated a lot of harsh chemicals in my daily hygiene routine. I’ve also been trying to do this in my diet.
I guess if you had to define what I eat, you could call it paleo-ish. You won’t find me arguing against lean protein, vegetables, and fruit as a healthy way of eating. However, sometimes I want a little pasta...or a baked potato...or some cheese. You’re telling me that a caveman wouldn’t eat a potato? I don’t know about that. What I think is most important, though, is eating cleanly. Eating food not loaded up with preservatives. Eating meats and produce raised on farms that don’t douse the landscape in chemical fertilizers and insecticides. If you haven’t watched Food, Inc. yet, I highly recommend checking it out. Anyway, switching to this style of eating has definitely limited my post-workout shake options. Until today…
I threw this shake together today with a little help from a few other recipes I found on the Internet. Taking a piece here and a piece there until I had the foods and the flavors I wanted without any of the extraneous crap. I wanted to share the recipe with all of you.
Chocolate-Nut Butter Protein Shake
2 Heaping Tablespoons of Justin’s Classic Almond Butter
5 Ice Cubes
I took those five ingredients, threw them in our Vitamix (the greatest blended ever made!), blended them on the smoothie setting, and had an incredible smoothie. I mean this was really good! I was so surprised. I had started out today as a small experiment in trying to find the right recipe, and I won’t be altering this one. Hope you enjoy!
